"Farnesio" Cavalry Regiment Nº12 “Charoska” (Code: SE58)

FERPRAD has built this reply of the famous “Charoska”  what identified to the Regiment of Cavalry “Farnesio” Nº 12, the most ancient of Spain of this branch. The piece hold the tradition of this unit. Is a numerates edition and is out of catalogue. Please call us for details.

For explain the motive of a russian ritual in an spanish regiment we have back to the year 1908, the five of January of this year the king Alfonso XIII of Spain named to the Tzar Nicolas II of Russia honorary colonel of the regiment “Farnesio” 5º of Cavalry in demonstration of friendship to the Tzar and thankful for to be named to this time for the Tzar honorary colonel of the 7º Regiment of “Ulan’s of Olviopol”.

 

For commemorate this distinction the russian tzar send to Spain to one officer of this russian cavalry regiment  with differents presents yet a portrait of the Tzar, a photo-book of the regiment and a silver receptacle with a form of soup-tureen called in russian “Charoska” or in a free translation “Tzar´s pretty bowl” what the ulans  use in the reception of new recruits to his regiment.

“Is the Charoska an ancient rite of the russian army, we know this for the withe russian what fight with us  in Albaicin ridge and adapted to the spanish way. All the officer are formed in a  row in order of antiquity with the hands over the shoulders of the the officer of forward. The oldest officer in head hold a receptacle (charoska) with a glass of wine or a strong liquor and offer to the new officer the drink saying “Here offer you wine and happiness” and the  new rookie in straight position have to drink all the glass in a only shoot”

This rite of initiation was describe for the writer Salvador Garcia de Pruneda in his book “The lonely of Alcuneza” (La soledad de Alcuneza)This tradition is lost with the end of the Civil War, 1936-39, but in 1976 the major Francisco Queipo de Llano y Acuña recover this one for his regiment the “Farnesio” 12º of Cavalry. 

Today the tradition have some variations because is applied also to officers how NCO´s, and unofficially for the troops, and the players don’t form in a row if not in a circle and in the centre the new member accept the libation sit in a saddle  with this words. “I am a spanish noble knight. I come to offer wine and happiness how good cavalry soldier. This the original “Charoska”present of the Tzar Nicolas II to the regiment “Farnesio” and is preserved in the museum of this unit in his base of Valladolid, is a magnificent work of silversmith and show the charge of a cossack with his sabre in draw.
